Ear Wax Removal

What is Ear Irrigation?

Ear syringing is a procedure where warm water is used to gently irrigate the ear canal to remove excess ear wax.
For the procedure to be effective, it is important to soften the wax beforehand by using ear drops twice daily for at least 7 days before your appointment. When booking your appointment, please specifically request ear syringing.

How to Prepare for Ear Irrigation

1. Use Ear Drops

  • Use ear drops twice daily for a minimum of 7 days before your appointment.
  • You can ask your pharmacist for over-the-counter ear drops, or use warm olive oil.

2. How to Apply the Drops

  • Wash your hands before applying drops to reduce the risk of introducing bacteria into the ear canal.
  • Lie down on your side with the affected ear facing upwards.
  • Place the drops into the ear as directed on the bottle.
  • Remain in this position for 10 minutes to allow the drops to soak in.
  • After 10 minutes, place cotton wool loosely in the ear to help keep the drops in.
  • Repeat the same steps for the other ear if needed.

Important Information

Do not use ear drops if you have a perforated eardrum, ear infection, or a history of ear surgery unless advised by a doctor.
If you experience pain, swelling, or discharge, stop using the drops and seek medical advice.
Ear syringing should be avoided if there is an active ear infection or if you are prone to frequent ear infections.
